What Does a Mechanical Engineer Do?

On a commercial building, a mechanical engineer designs the systems that heat, cool, ventilate, and control the interior—then documents them so they can be built and operated.

A mechanical engineer working on buildings designs the systems that move heat, air, and water. That includes cooling, heating, ventilation, humidity control, and the automation that operates those systems. The deliverable is not a service truck. It is a basis of design, calculations, drawings, specifications, and construction-phase review.

On the Space Coast, that work is mostly commercial, institutional, and industrial. Architects need coordinated shafts and equipment rooms. Contractors need documents they can bid. Owners need systems that can be commissioned. Facility managers need sequences that still make sense after the contractor leaves.

Design, not installation

Mechanical engineers calculate loads, select system types, and define performance. Installing technicians set equipment. Both are necessary; they are not the same job. If a clinic needs a new air handler, the engineer decides capacity, outdoor air, filtration, and controls. The contractor installs what was specified, or proposes substitutions that the engineer reviews.
